Product roadmap
The VPen’s functionality is expected to expand into other data applications where motion detection is a key enabler, such as barcode scanning, text scanning and signature authentication. The ability to incorporate these additional functionalities in the VPen™ strengthens its competitive advantage as a total solution for mobile data input.
Barcode scanning and Text scanning
The company plans barcode and text scanning capabilities as future enhancements for the VPen™. In a growingly digitized world, where products and information are identified electronically through barcodes, there is a clear need to scan barcodes on-the-go for shopping, information links in ads etc. In addition, mobile professionals or students, require the ability to scan lines of text and record the information, instead of typing such text or handwriting it.
The company can offer scanning of barcode and text by leveraging on the same OTM™ sensor used in the VPen™. Accurate scanning is enabled through use of the OTM™ component to synchronize the motion of the hand while scanning. The OTM™ chip placed at the tip of the VPen™ measures its motion in 2 dimensions very accurately. Measurement in two axes is important as compensation of the pen location perpendicular to the scanned line, results in significant reduction of the error rate of transferring the text to an ASCII code or capturing barcodes accurately.
Signature authentication
Another potential use for the VPen™ is for signature authentication. In a very fast growing field of eCommerce and mCommerce, the customer’s natural handwritten signature can be used to secure financial transactions. Such signature recognition is based not only on the signature shape but also on the dynamic characteristics of the signing action.
Memory
Another extension to the VPen™ functionality involves adding memory capacity to the VPen™, thus enabling ‘off-line’ mode for handwriting and scanning; the VPen™ can then be used to scan and store text or barcode for later transfer to the target device.
